Taverna Cretekou Greek Cuisine - On King St in Old Town Alexandria, VA
It was night when we got to King St in Old Town Alexandria. The white Christmas style lights in the trees were on and they lent a little bit of magic to the old storefronts lining the street. I was immediately enchanted. We walked up and down both sides of the road and finally decided to eat at Taverna Cretekou. The food was pretty good, definitely better than average, but not as bewilderingly delicious as some of the other food I had on that trip to the east coast. I think that, while the food really was very good, the old town atmosphere really gave the experience a boost.

Thermopylae Gyro & Souvlaki Sandwiches - On Commercial St SE in Salem, OR
It's so nice to see some food carts in Salem. I really hope that the economy-killing bureaucrats don't suffocate them with red tape. The Gyros are delicious and probably the best in Salem. The guy running the place was nice and the food was reasonably priced. He charged me for some "extras" that some places might not, but the total was still reasonable.

Mad Greek - Really far west in NW Portland, OR
This is one of those magical places from my childhood. When I was a kid, we used to go here all the time and get the most amazing sandwiches. Then we moved to Arizona for a while and then moved back Oregon, but to Salem. When I got a job in Portland, I made a trip out there to get one of those delicious sandwiches. They weren't bad, but not nearly as amazing as what I remembered. Not even good enough to make another trip out there from downtown. I think that the thing that made it disappointing was the bread, which, I admit, can change from day to day and hour to hour. The Gyro that my brother got looked a lot better.

The Sultan Cafe - Near the corner of NW 18th and Quimby in Portland, OR
This place is a few blocks from my office, so I go here regularly, and I have always had a really great dinning experience. I have recommended it to a few friends and they have all really liked it. The employees are really warm, happy people and the food is delicious. I love that all the walls are windows because I love to watch the world go round as I eat. I have never been here later that about 3 p.m., but this place gets a good amount of business everyday at lunch time, which tells you something.
To be honest, The Sultan CafĂ© is Mediterranean food, but it seems a bit Americanised to me. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though. It’s still really good food and it’s great if you want to turn someone on to Mediterranean food that generally eats exclusively American/European food.
Go here and enjoy, I do!
